St Petes workshop people co2.jpg (182758 bytes)He is a past Director trustee of the Archie Bray Foundation of Ceramics, was honored as Distinguished Scholar by the University of Montana in 1984, elected honorary member of Ornamo, Finland's Designers organization, elected a member of Internal Ceramic Society based in Geneva, and was appointed Visiting Eminent Scholar in Art at Florida Atlantic University in Feb/Mar of 1987, and in September 1993 was honored among the "Centennial 100" graduates of Montana State University.

Autio has conducted more than a hundred workshops and lectures in ceramic art throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Finland, Japan, and Norway and has exhibited his work in national and international exhibitions.  He is represented in museums and important public collections such as the American Craftsmen's Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, the Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian, St. Louis Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Carnegie Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Portland Art Museum, the Applied Arts Museum in Helsinki, the National Museum in Stockholm, and the Shigariki and Aichi Ceramic Museums in Japan.

While Autio's best known work is figurative ceramic vessels, he has worked in a variety of materials and other media.  In addition to commissions in ceramic relief and tile murals, he has worked in bronze, concrete, glass, fabricated metal sculpture, and design of colorful Rya tapestries.  Most of these were commissioned for public buildings in the Northwest and one is in Finland.
